Natural Light

Natural light is beautiful, but it can also be challenging. The way you position your subject, choose your background, and adapt to changing conditions can make the difference between an average photo and a magical one.

In these sessions I’ll break down the rules of working with available light into simple, practical steps. You’ll leave with the confidence to recognise and use natural light to enhance your portraits, no matter the location or weather.

Using Flash

Adding flash to your photography isn’t just about brightening your scene — it gives you more creative control over exposure, mood, and storytelling. It can feel daunting at first, but once you understand the basics, it opens up a world of possibilities.

These workshops will guide you step by step through using flash with confidence, balancing it with natural light, and overcoming common challenges. You’ll pick up transferable skills that can elevate your work across every kind of portrait shoot.

Who Is This Workshop For?

These workshops are ideal for photographers of all levels who want to take their portrait work further. Whether you’re a beginner just stepping away from auto mode or an intermediate photographer looking to refine your control of light, you’ll find practical, hands-on guidance that will make an immediate difference to your portraits.

What to Bring

  • A camera you’re comfortable with (DSLR or mirrorless preferred).
  • At least one portrait-friendly lens (a fast prime like 50mm or 85mm is ideal, but not essential).
  • A notebook if you like to jot down tips and lighting setups.
  • Optional: A speedlight/flash if you have one — but don’t worry if not, we’ll provide guidance on using shared equipment.
  • Plenty of enthusiasm and willingness to experiment!

My aim is for you to leave with both knowledge and confidence: practical techniques you can apply straight away, and the inspiration to keep developing your portrait style.
