GCSE Photography Workshops (One-to-One)
About Me
I’m Andy Hornby, an award-winning, internationally published photographer based in Portsmouth. I cover landscapes, weddings, portraits and commercial work — but my real passion is teaching. Over the years I’ve built a successful workshop program helping students grow their confidence and creativity behind the camera.
Many GCSE Photography students need more hands-on practice than they’re getting in class. These one-to-one, on-location workshops are tailored to the GCSE curriculum and designed to build practical skills, confidence, and a stronger portfolio.
Sessions typically run in Southsea or Old Portsmouth and focus on real-world outcomes students can use immediately in their coursework.
Workshop Overview
- Fundamentals of Photography: Camera control, composition, aperture, shutter speed and ISO.
- Theme Exploration: Respond to a brief just like coursework, with personalised guidance.
- Techniques & Context: Apply historical and contemporary approaches to real scenes.
- Portfolio Development: Build cohesive sets and improve presentation/layout choices.

These sessions bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world photography. Students leave with practical skills, stronger portfolios and the confidence to excel.
Whether your child needs help with the basics or wants to push their creativity, the one-to-one format ensures focused learning and immediate, personalised feedback.
Child Protection & Safety
I hold a current DBS check. For safeguarding, any participant under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian throughout the session. This keeps learning safe, supportive and transparent.
What You’ll Need
- A DSLR or mirrorless camera with manual controls (aperture / shutter / ISO).
- Standard kit lens (18–55mm) is fine; 50mm prime or a zoom is a bonus.
- Tripod (recommended for long exposure / movement sessions).
- Spare batteries and memory cards.
Phone cameras aren’t ideal for GCSE fundamentals (limited manual control/sensor size). If you need advice on beginner cameras, contact me.
Workshop Pricing
One-to-One Workshops: £175 per session (approx. 2–3 hours), tailored to the student’s needs, pace and goals, with direct feedback and portfolio guidance.
